Women entrepreneurs -- 2007 drop in activity

Business startup rates shifted in 2007, Kauffman study findsThe rate of entrepreneurial activity among women dropped sharply in 2007 while the activity rate among men and immigrants surged, according to a national assessment of entrepreneurial activity by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation released today.

“At a time when the nation is concerned about the economy, it is heartening to see that entrepreneurial activity continues to rise,” said Carl Schramm, president and chief executive officer of the foundation. “The entrepreneurial sector is a critical factor in our nation’s economic growth. Even during times of recession, new firms have been responsible for the bulk of new jobs and innovations in America. That is why it is vital to track startup trends the way we track other economic indicators.”

The Kauffman Index of Entrepreneurial Activity — the only annual study to measure business startup activity for the entire U.S. adult population at the individual owner level — found there were 495,000 new businesses started per month in 2007 with 300 out of 100,000 adults involved. This entrepreneurial activity rate is a slight increase over the 2006 rate of 290 out of 100,000 adults.

Celebrating the commonality of the Iowa immigrant experience

Presented by the Des Moines Choral Society~

This concert marks a return to our Iowa Heritage Series, this time showcasing Iowa’s immigrants. In “Destination Iowa”, the Des Moines Choral Society pays tribute to the commonality of the immigrant experience—across generations and across cultures. We who call Iowa home have a reason to feel settled here. Partnering with The Council for International Understanding, we will celebrate these reasons in story and song with music honoring a multitude of different backgrounds including German, French, Meskwaki, Latin American, Norwegian and Czech. We close with a fitting tribute to Governor Robert Ray, whose activism saved the lives of hundreds of Southeast Asian refugees, many of whom now call Iowa home. Join us to celebrate Iowa’s immigrant experience on April 26, 2008.

Morning Session: “Dealing with Negative

Attitudes in the Workplace”

Many people are being robbed, but the culprit hasn’t been arrested. Who is this elusive criminal? Negativism! It is a thief robbing life of adventure and joy, affecting every institution of society. Bad attitudes can cost you plenty in terms of productivity and morale. Not only do problem employees perform poorly, they make it tough for everyone else to do their jobs. Steve will show you how to turn negative attitudes into positive behaviors and problems into opportunities. You’ll learn why people have bad attitudes in the first place and explore ways to head off conflict and confront people about their bad attitudes. You’ll also learn powerful new ways to deal with the by-products of bad attitudes—resistance to change and personality conflicts. Tolerating an employee’s negative attitude “as long as the job gets done” is no longer an acceptable responsibility. Armed with information you glean from this session, you’ll be on your way to finding win-win solutions that will have you and your colleagues working effectively—together.

Lunch Session: “A License to Chill”

How to Manage Your Emotions and Thrive Under Pressure

Do you ever feel that there simply aren’t enough hours in the day? Do you feel like you can’t live without your cell phone and laptop? Do problems drain your emotions and zap your energy and zest for life? Doe the pace of life sometimes feel downright overwhelming? If you’ve answered “yes” to some or all of these question, it may be time to make adjustments or even some major changes in your life. In this session, Steve Gilliland will show you how to stay on an even keel and change your approach to managing demanding work responsibilities. He will help you slow down, take a deep breath and regain control of your life. The session is packed with tools, techniques and advice to help you permanently change the way you work and live. You will learn how to replace patterns of distorted thinking with “reality thinking” and how to order your priorities and assess your own self-management skills. You can’t add more time to a day, but you can get more done in less time and achieve all the things you’ve always wanted to accomplish. This is a powerfully enlightening yet practical session for every person who needs to rejuvenate, recharge and learn the secret to “going with the flow”.

Afternoon Session: “Enjoy the Ride”

Through sidesplitting humor and reality-tested techniques, Steve reveals the way to face conflicts in an unforgiving business environment that keeps getting tougher. From the beginning when he shows people how to reignite their passion, to the end with his compelling challenge to “never lose your focus” he releases an “explosion of enthusiasm” that is absolutely contagious. It is simple, clear and easy to grasp—yet profound! Fasten your seatbelt and hold on as one of America’s most entertaining keynote speaker shows you how to “Enjoy the Ride!”
